The Fraze engine (Parakeet plus Bergamot) runs on macOS 14 and later. On macOS 26, Fraze can also use Apple's own SpeechAnalyzer for more spoken languages, and its Translation framework on macOS 26.4 and later, where the on-device low-latency mode exists.

Windows always uses the Fraze engine (Parakeet plus Bergamot) for both speech and translation. There is no Apple engine on Windows.

On the floor configuration, expect captions to land about half a second to a second after a speaker pauses, with translation adding roughly another tenth of a second. Those two figures are estimates from our own component measurements, not yet a stopwatch on a floor machine. Below the floor, speech recognition falls behind live audio.
After you install
What happens on first use.
Fraze asks you to sign in, then downloads models the first time you pick a language: the speech model (about 670 MB, from Hugging Face) and each translation pair (30 to 45 MB, from Mozilla's Firefox Translations CDN). On macOS 26, the Apple engine uses macOS's own built-in models instead, downloaded by the system. Every model is kept on disk and downloaded once.
